Notes on Prints

The art prints offered on this website are printed on Hahnemühle Photo Rag, a 100% cotton rag paper with a felt surface texture. This supple heavyweight paper (308 GSM) has a matte, velvety sheen that makes for a soft looking print without glare. The prints are made with high-end inkjet printers using archival pigment inks (Epson Ultra Chrome, Canon LUCIA EX). Elsewhere people have rebranded inkjet prints on fine art paper as “Giclée” prints. They are utterly the same.

Prints on this website are delivered without mat, signature or frame. They are unnumbered, open editions. The title of the image is printed discreetly on the bottom of each print along with my JK initials. When space allows I try to center title and chop though when space is limited I position the initials to the left.

Prints display terrific detail and sharpness. They begin with a 45 megapixel sensor (fairly big) and quality lenses producing raw files rich in detail. I make extensive adjustments to the raw files including color balance, exposure, contrast, burning, dodging, and masking and adjusting local areas. On occasion I retouch. I do not see myself as a journalist so I allow myself this liberty. I come from the era of shooting film and I have an affection for film grain. I sharpen the images to draw out detail and do not try to eliminate pleasing grain. The matte rag papers on which I prefer to print blur the inkjet ink somewhat and slightly soften the detail of the images.

Prints will likely arrive with a curl. This is normal. Over time if the prints are stored flat or matted they will relax and flatten. If a print has been damaged in shipping contact me immediately for a replacement print.

Be sure to treat your print with care. The ink on the surface of the print can scuff easily. Until your print is secure in a mat and/or frame store your print in the plastic sleeve in which it arrived. See Framing and Matting.
